Yanaka Cemetery: History and Serenity in Tokyo

Overview

Located in Tokyo's Yanaka district, Yanaka Cemetery spans 10 hectares and dates back to 1872 during the Meiji era. Originally part of Tennoji Temple, it became a public cemetery as part of Japan's policy to separate Buddhism and Shintoism. Over 7,000 graves are located here, including those of notable historical figures.

Key Features

  • Historical Figures: Final resting place of Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the last shogun, and former Prime Minister Ichirō Hatoyama.
  • Cherry Blossom Lane: The "Sakura-dori" pathway, lined with cherry trees, is a popular spot for hanami during spring.
  • Five-Story Pagoda: Although destroyed in 1957, it remains a significant historical landmark.

Atmosphere

Yanaka Cemetery offers a tranquil retreat with tree-lined paths, small gardens, and a peaceful atmosphere. Its park-like layout attracts visitors for quiet walks among the gravestones, often accompanied by the sight of stray cats. The calm environment provides a stark contrast to Tokyo's bustling city life.
