What Are Kokeshi Dolls?

Kokeshi dolls (こけし, 小芥子) are handcrafted wooden dolls originating from the Tohoku region in northern Honshu, Japan. These iconic dolls, which have been crafted for over 150 years, are characterized by their simple design: a trunk and head, with no arms or legs. Kokeshi dolls were traditionally made as toys for children but have since become cherished collectibles.

Design and Craftsmanship

Each kokeshi doll is carved from wood and features a simple yet elegant design. The head and trunk are decorated with thin, painted lines to define the face, while the body often showcases floral or ring patterns painted in red, black, and occasionally green, purple, blue, or yellow. A layer of wax is applied to give the dolls a polished finish. One of their defining characteristics is the absence of arms and legs, making their design unique and minimalist.

Modern Signatures

Since the 1950s, kokeshi artisans have started signing their creations, usually on the bottom of the doll and sometimes on the back. These signatures add a personal touch and help identify the maker, adding to the doll's value as a collectible.
