SAPPORO

The capital of Hokkaido, North Japan.

On this page you can get in touch with our Sapporo Video Production company.

Sapporo (札幌, "major river flowing across a plain" in the Ainu language) is the capital of Hokkaido and the fifth largest city in Japan. Sapporo is also one of the nation's youngest cities. In 1857, the city's population was only seven.

At the beginning of the Meiji period, when the large-scale development of Hokkaido began, Sapporo was chosen as the administrative center of the island and expanded according to the opinion of foreign specialists. As a result, Sapporo was built based on a north American-style rectangular road system.

Sapporo became very famous worldwide in 1972 when the Winter Olympic Games were held there. Today, the city is renowned for its ramen, beer, and the annual snow festival held in February.

What to see in Sapporo

In Sapporo, you can see the very famous Snow Festival in February.

The city is fairly new; some places of interest are outside the city, such as Moerenuma Park or the historic village of Hokkaido.

You have a great view of the city from Mount Moiwa and the Okurayama Observatory (ski jump).

Sapporo Snow Festival

The "Sapporo Snow Festival" (in Japanese, Sapporo Yuki Matsuri) is held every February in Sapporo and lasts for a week. It is one of the most popular winter events in Japan.

The Sapporo Snow Festival originated in 1950, when high school students began building some snow statues in Odori Park.

It has since developed into a major commercial event, featuring spectacular snow sculptures, and also attracting more than two million travelers and vitors from Japan and worldwide.

The festival takes place in three distinct locations: Odori Park, Susukino, and Tsudome.

Odori Park

Odori Park (Odori Kōen) is located in downtown Sapporo and separates the city into north and south. The park stretches about a mile for more than twelve blocks and provides a stunning green space during the warm period of the year. In early February, the park hosts the main site of the Sapporo Snow Festival.

Sapporo Beer Museum

Hokkaido is the birthplace of the Sapporo beer in Japan. Sapporo beer is one of the country's oldest and most popular brands; Sapporo Beer has been brewed in Sapporo since 1877 and is now brewed and sold worldwide. Sapporo Breweries opened the Beer Museum in 1987 in a former brewery from the Meiji period. The museum presents the history of beer in Japan and the brewing process but has few explanations in English. A beer tasting is available after the visit for a small additional fee.

Susukino

Susukino is a large entertainment district. It is filled with stores, bars, restaurants, karaoke parlors, pachinko parlors, and red-light clubs. Of particular interest to noodle, lovers is Ramen Yokocho (Ramen Alley and New Ramen Alley), a narrow street lined with stores serving Sapporo's famous ramen.

Botanical Garden (Hokudai Shokubutsuen)

This botanical garden is near the center of Sapporo City and belongs to Hokkaido University, and serves mainly scientific and educational purposes. However, the garden, with its paths and meadows, is also a pleasant place to take a break or have a picnic.

Only the greenhouse is open during the winter (November 4 to April 28).

Nijo Market

Nijo (Nijō Ichiba) is a public market in downtown Sapporo, occupying about one city block. Residents and tourists visit the market to buy fresh local food and seafood such as crabs, salmon roe, sea urchins, and other fresh and packaged fish.
