THE CAMPANILE OF SAN MARCO

Affectionately called "el paron de casa" by Venetians, the Campanile di San Marco, at nearly 100 meters high, dominates Venice.

It is located in St. Mark's Square in the heart of the city. It is one of the symbols of La Serenissima and definitely one of the things to see, whatever the length of your stay.

St. Mark's bell tower originated in the ninth century as a watchtower (even today to those arriving from the sea it announces that you have almost arrived in Venice).

Throughout its history it has undergone many remodeling, being completely renovated in 15511-14.

In 1902 it collapsed on itself suddenly, and on the very evening of its collapse it was decided to rebuild it "as it was where it was."

WHAT THE BELL TOWER OF SAN MARCO LOOKS LIKE

The bell tower is a square parallelepiped made entirely of brick. It culminates in a belfry opened by a four-mullioned window. On the drum rests a very high pyramidal spire on which rests a statue depicting the archangel Gabriel.

It originally had five bells, of which only one, called the Marangona, has survived. The name comes from the fact that at its sound carpenters would start and finish work. The bell also gave notice of the beginning of meetings of the Great Council.

Be sure to take the elevator and climb up to the belfry. You will enjoy a 360-degree view of the city of incomparable beauty!

Leaning against the basement of the side overlooking St. Mark's Basilica is the famous loggetta. During the collapse it was also damaged, but was rebuilt exactly as it was with the original fragments.

The loggetta was first the seat of the Nobles and then the Arsenalotti Corps. On the front are 3 arches and niches with bronze statues. The front terrace with balustrade, on the other hand, was built in the 1700s.

Be sure to take the elevator and climb up to the belfry. You will enjoy a 360-degree view of the city of incomparable beauty.
